How to Install Joomla 3 with Softaculous

There are three 1-click applications that you can use to install Joomla 3. There's Softaculous, Installatron and Fantastico. One-click applications are the easiest way for beginners of Joomla to get started with the software, it cuts down on the technical details and it lets you focus on getting straight into working on your website. Your web hosting company may have one, or all three applications installed. The most popular 1-click application for installing Joomla is Softaculous, and that's the software that we will use in this tutorial.

1. Log in to your cPanel Dashboard

To log in to cpanel, you need to enter your domain and add ":2083" (or the words "cpanel") at the end of the URL. For example, the domain I'm using is So I enter

Now that you've logged into cPanel, find the Softaculous Installer icon and click on it. After clicking on Softaculous, you will be presented with a list of software that Softaculous can automatically install. Find the Joomla icon and click on it.

3. Fill in the Details

As you go through the details to install Joomla, you will be presented with a few joomla versions to install. It's recommended that you install the latest version of Joomla if you're starting a new site. At the time of this tutorial, Joomla 3.2.1 is the latest version which is a short term release and supported for the next 7 months. The great thing about Joomla is that there's a 1-click upgrade option built so you won't be stuck with this version. Joomla will automatically inform you of the latest upgrade once the newest Joomla version gets rolled out. The other thing that you should be aware of when using Softaculous is that you can specify where to install Joomla - either in the root directory (for example or in a sub directory ( If you want to install Joomla in the root directory, make sure that you leave the "In Directory" field empty, otherwise type the name into the "In Directory" field and Softalculous will install Joomla as a directory under that domain name. When you're ready, click the Install button to install Joomla. This process will usually take around 15-20 seconds after which, the installer will display the details of your new website. You will also be given the option to send your details to a specified email address for later reference.
